Teaching certificates are preferable and will increase your chances of admission, but not necessarily required.
As one of the value propositions of ESL Tutor, our aim is to connect language learners with native speakers, so being a native English speaker is generally required. However, we sometimes make exceptions for non-native speaking applicants with exceptionally high levels of proficiency, an English teaching education, and/or a minimum of 5 years English teaching experience.
Admitted teachers will hear back from us within 24 hours after submission. If something is missing in the application, we will contact you individually.

Payments

Teachers are paid through PayPal. If you are in a country where PayPal is unavailable, you can contact us to receive your funds via Moneybookers/Western Union. ESL Tutor offers a 100% guarantee that teachers are paid for their teaching.
We process all accounts and make payouts on the 7th business day of each month.
The amount of money you can earn depends on how many lessons you teach.
We have two options available:

1. Regular Tutor – Regular tutors are limited to one-on-one lessons which are all $22 per 45-minute lesson. ESL Tutor then deducts a commission from this amount before transferring the money to the tutor. The commission percentages range from 24% to 36% depending on your rank. Your rank will improve the more active you are on the site.

2. Pro Tutor – Pro Tutor membership is a paid membership at US$29.95 per month or $299.50 per year. Pro Tutors can have one-on-one lessons at $22 or group classes to which they can set their own prices. In addition, they can create self-study courses which they can sell on the website. All lessons and courses are subject to a commission deduction of between 12% and 24% depending on their rank.
If you’d like more control over how much money you can make, consider signing up for a Pro Tutor membership, which offers multiple income opportunities.

In order to make our pricing as transparent as possible, we make all private lessons the same price – currently US$22 per lesson. However, for group classes, you are free to set your own price.
ESL Tutor takes a commission in order to cover for administrative, support, and marketing costs. Commissions are deducted from the income of tutors prior to the transfer and range from 24-36% for regular tutors and 12-24% for Pro Tutors, depending on the tutor’s rank.

Technology

Teachers need a reliable internet connection, a fully functioning microphone, and a webcam.
All teaching on ESL Tutor is done through either Skype or Google Hangouts. However, we do prefer Google Hangouts (don’t worry – if you’re new to Hangouts, we can assure you it’s very easy to get started and easy to use).
All communication with students is done through either ESL Tutor’s messaging system or the scheduling software.
